Dirt Bike Engines
Dirt Bikes for Dummies - Dirt Bikes Explained

There are two types of dirt bike engines: two-stroke and four-stroke. Each type of dirt bike engine has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages of 2-stroke engine dirt bikes. A 2-stroke engine dirt bike does not have any valves and therefore, weighs less than a 4-stroke engine dirt bike. If you are a beginner dirt rider, buy a 2-stroke dirt bike. They are easier to handle than 4-stroke engine dirt bikes. If you’re looking to join a dirt bike race rather than merely enjoy the pleasures of dirt riding, a 2-stroke is the better option for you. This is going to be easy, as most dirt bikes today have 2-stroke engines.

A 2-stroke engine dirt bike is more powerful than a 4-stroke engine dirt bike. Two-stroke dirt bikes fire once for each revolution whereas 4-stroke dirt bikes fire once every other revolution. Thus, being lighter and more powerful, we might say that 2-stroke dirt bikes have superior power-to-weight ratio than 4-stroke dirt bikes.

Advantages of 4-stroke engine dirt bikes. A 2-stroke engine dirt bike wears out faster than a 4-stroke engine dirt bike. Two-stroke dirt bikes have less fuel efficiency than 4-stroke dirt bikes. Four-stroke dirt bikes are more environment-friendly and 2-stroke dirt bikes produce more pollution. In some states, like California, for instance, 2-stroke dirt bikes are not allowed on public property due to the toxic pollutants they emit. There are dirt bike manufacturers that are testing the feasibility of putting 4-stroke engines in some of the newer dirt bike models to reduce pollution. These dirt bike manufacturers are also trying to reduce the emissions produced by the 2-stroke dirt bikes.
