Dirt Bikes for Dummies - Parts & Repairs

Knowing how to fix dirt bikes yourself saves you up a lot of cash and the trouble of looking for service centers that repair dirt bikes. Maintaining and fixing your own bike also enables you to get to know your dirt bike intimately, so to speak. Here are a few do-it-yourself tips on how to fix dirt bike specific problems with a focus on dented exhaust pipes.

Denting of your exhaust pipes will always happen, just as crashes will always happen when you are a dirt rider.

The most important thing to do when repairing your dirt bike’s dented exhaust pipe is to cap it. Cap your exhaust pipe’s header so that it is totally sealed. Some riders assemble their exhaust pipes from aluminum, steel and gasket material for a complete seal. You might want to try this when fixing your dirt bike.

Next, clean your exhaust pipe’s stinger end and secure the air compressor hose tightly. Ensure that your exhaust pipe’s stinger end is clean and attached to the compressor hose snugly so that it doesn’t get blown off from the pressure.

Then you must apply pressure on your exhaust pipe, keeping within around 70 pounds psi, but not exceeding 100 pounds psi. The amount of pressure you should use will depend on the location and extent of the dent in your exhaust pipe. With the use of a blowtorch, bend or smooth over your dirt bike’s exhaust pipe back into its former shape. Do not use too much heat or pressure that might result in an explosion. Remember: When on a fix-your-dirt-bike-yourself project like this, always wear protective clothing.

After your dirt bike’s exhaust pipe has cooled down, get a rotary wire wheel and use it to sand the pipe and iron out the finish. There are times when the end result of fix-your-dirt-bike-yourself project will be better than new because of improved expansion.

To give your dirt bike its finishing touch, apply a fresh coat of paint on your ‘new’ old exhaust pipe. This should make your ‘new’ old dirt bike return at peak-level performance.
